How do you lure them back home after they run to the creek?

I’d like to get one, but I feel like they just aren’t built for Wisconsin winters. I’m sure you just need to bundle them up more, but it’s like people who get huskies in Florida and Texas...it just feels a bit cruel.

Greyhounds are great dogs. I’ve never met one I didn’t like. Generally super lazy. They do tend to have a high chase drive so be mindful. I knew one that from the dog park. Had to wear a cage muzzle because sometimes it’d want to chase the little dogs and the owner was being extra cautious. It was a former race dog.
If I weren’t full on dogs I’d consider one.

It usually depends on the dog. My two could care less about small dogs and cats but wild bunnies will peak their attention . I have pictures of Gibbs with a pet rabbit and he was just loving the pets.

You are in luck, here is a husky greyhound mix. It is tall, skinny, lazy, furry, sheds 12 months a year, a finicky
eater, and will chase any wild animal until it gets lost.

I had a shepard-husky mix growing up and I have no idea how he had any fur left at the rate he would shed.

my aunt and uncle used to have whippets, which are descended from greyhounds. very similar in most ways; when they (occasionally) get it in their minds to go for a run they’re a sight to behold b ut spend most of their time loafing around the house. very affectionate and quiet.
but man, they’ll thwack everything nearby with those tails.

Every once in a while we find blood splatter on the walls courtesy of my older greyhound getting very excited , breaking the tip of his tail open, and flinging blood everywhere.

Our neighbor has a rescue greyhound. It’s just the best dog ever. All it wants is to lean against you and get pets
. It spent the first 2
-3 years of its life living in a crate. It just craves contact. So calm and gentle.

If he’s not fenced in he’s on a leash or rope 100% of the time.

There’s one that lives in my neighborhood outside Milwaukee. From what i recall, the owner just throws a coat on it when its cold out. We have one for our dog too. Hes a lab-hound mix, but kinda a wuss about the cold.

There’s a whippet that goes to the same dog park we do. Its amazing to watch it run full out. It simply dusts every other dog there.

The timing on this unfortunately doesn't work for me. I’ve wanted a greyhound for several years now, but we have 3 cats, 2 of which are getting up there in years and have assorted health stuff that needs attending to. Adding another pet to the house would just be too much of a disruption for them.

I definitely saw people with greyhounds when I lived in Madison. The local greyhound rescue sometimes did adoption events at PetSmart. They need coats to go out in the winter, and warm comfy beds inside. Maybe with blankets.

I fully support this. I have met a number of Greyhounds, almost all rescues, and I have yet to meet one that isn’t the sweetest, most docile dog alive since the last Greyhound I met
.

I’ve already told my wife that when we move somewhere we can have dogs (which hopefully is in the next year) I definitely want to get a dog. After my research and meeting a few at local events where a greyhound rescue was in attendance I’m 90% positive they’re the ideal dog for me.
I know they need protection from severe heat and cold, but is there a rule of thumb where above or beyond a very temperature you need to be more careful or does it vary from dog to dog as far as what they can tolerate?
What do you use in terms of collar/harness for walks? The local rescue specifically recommends martingale style collars on their site, but most of the people that foster for them seem to use harnesses.

Greyhounds are pretty much inside dogs. I live in Tennessee so it gets hot enough and cold enough to be an issue, but generally for short term extreme weather they’re fine.
Definitely use a martingale. They’re cheaper than harnesses and people that use harnesses on big dogs don’ t make sense to me. A big dog goes where its head goes and the martingale will bring the head/neck where you w ant it to go. The harness gives the dog all the leverage to pull with. Also, greyhounds are very good at sliding them on when you go to head out.

Figure just like cars it’s best to get dogs second hand and let the original owner take the depreciation hit. I’m definitely a dog person and greyhounds seem like they’d be the best fit for my lifestyle.
